この標本について
晶洞から切り出し、ハート形に整えたマダガスカル産の天青石です。外壁は淡いグレーブルーに磨いた殻としてそのまま残し、開いた面はまるごと結晶に委ねています。中央からわずかに外れた位置にいちばん大きな結晶が座り、四角い塊状で、爪ほどの幅の平らな錐面で終わっています。その周りを数十の小さな結晶が取り囲み、無色からやわらかなコーンフラワーブルーまで色を変えていきます。
天青石は硫酸ストロンチウム、SrSO4です。斜方晶系でモース硬度3〜3.5。磨いた縁はより硬い石が当たれば擦り傷がつきますし、結晶面にざらついた布を当ててはいけません。マダガスカルの天青石は堆積岩の空隙で成長するもので、この青は処理によるものではなく結晶そのものの色です。直射日光に長く当てると色が褪せますので、日陰の棚に置いてください。
寸法は15.2 × 7.6 × 10.2 cm、重さは1,565 g。1.5 kgを少し超え、手のひらいっぱいの大きさです。無地のグレーを背景に、スタンドなしで手に持って撮影しました。写真のハートが、そのままお手元に届きます。
