この標本について
サムネイルほどの長さしかない、淡く脆い母岩の楔。その一端に鮮烈なマゼンタが咲いています。菱マンガン鉱の、菫寄りの色合いです。右の縁からは一回り小さな藤色の先端が二つ芽吹いています。結晶の表面はガラス質ではなく艶のない砂糖のような肌合いなので、色は反射ではなく顔料として目に届き、灰色の背景に置けば、この大きさの標本とは思えないほど鮮やかに映ります。
菱マンガン鉱はマンガンの炭酸塩（MnCO3）で、方解石ではカルシウムが占める構造上の位置にマンガンが座っています。格子がマンガンを多く取り込むほど、ピンクは濃く燃え立ちます。モース硬度3.5〜4で簡単に傷がつき、酸に触れれば侵されます——家庭用洗剤に含まれる酢もその一つです。乾いたまま埃を払う、それだけに留めてください。
3.6 × 1.3 × 2.3 cm、11 g と、握れば手のひらの中に消えてしまう小ささです。写真の透明アクリルの立方体に、あらかじめパテで留めた状態でお届けします。ここに写っているものが、そのままお手元に届く標本です。
