この標本について
太く育ったストロー状の鍾乳石に、衣を着せたような姿です。この雲南省産標本の芯は鍾乳状に伸びた方解石の柱で、その表面はどこも、先端がとがった琥珀オレンジ色の短い結晶に覆われています。大きな結晶の間には同じ鉱物の錆色の微細な放射状結晶が地衣類のように密生し、円錐の足元では温かな鉄の染みが尽きて、淡い黄緑色の方解石が現れます。
鍾乳状の方解石は、炭酸塩を含んだ水が洞窟の空隙に滴り落ちるところから始まり、層を重ねて中空の管を築いていきます。第二世代の結晶がその管の外側へ育つのはずっと後のことで、この標本の毛羽立った円錐形はそうしてできたものです。方解石はCaCO3、モース硬度3で菱面体方向に完全な劈開を持ち、薄い酸にさえ溶けます。手入れは乾いた埃払いだけにとどめ、酢は決して使わないでください。
4.1 × 2.9 cmの底面に高さ5.2 cmで立ち、重さは126 g。白いパテを使い、透明アクリルの展示台に直立させた状態で撮影しています。カメラが記録したその姿のままお届けします。
