Shangbao, Hunan, yellow hexagonal calcite with quartz at 7.3 cm and 140 g; a small cabinet piece with warm colour.
Collectors chase calcite for form rather than colour: crisp crystal edges and a habit you can identify from across the room.
Quartz is the most collected mineral on earth for good reason: sharp hexagonal prisms, bright terminations and endless variation between localities.
Hunan is the heartland of Chinese mineral collecting, home to Yaogangxian, Xianghualing and Shangbao, and its fluorite, calcite and sulfides are the benchmark for the country.
Dimensions place it in the small cabinet range, 7.3 × 5.5 × 5.3 cm (2.87 × 2.17 × 2.09 in) and 140 g (4.9 oz). Condition is otherwise as photographed.
