この標本について
段を上り、ずれ、また段を上る——透明な蛍石の立方体が角と角を重ねながら、この北京産の群晶を登っていきます。縁は麦わらのように淡く、二つ三つと重なるところでは温かなハチミツ色へと深まります。どの面も光を映すほど明るく、手前の結晶越しに奥の立方体が見えるほど澄んでいます。内部の成長面のいくつかには、かすかな鉱物の筋や錆色の膜が閉じ込められています。群晶全体は、同じ黄金色の小さな結晶が点在するざらついた鉄褐色の母岩に載っています。
すべてがガラスのように澄みきっているわけではありません。いくつかの立方体の芯には淡い成長の曇りがあり、結晶どうしがぶつかって育った縁は段になったり欠けたりしています。蛍石は CaF2、等軸晶系でモース硬度4。八面体方向に完全な劈開があるため、角をぶつけると欠けるのではなく、きれいな三角形の薄片が剥がれます。蛍石には紫外線で蛍光するものとしないものがあり、この個体も決めつけずに一度試してみる価値があります。
全体で5.8 × 5.6 × 3.5 cm、109 g。母岩の裏面が平らなので、棚にそのまま置けます。撮影はあるがままの状態で行いました。写真の群晶が、そのままお手元に届く群晶です。
