이 작은 포도석 구체의 표면에서는 올리브빛과 이끼빛이 서로 자리를 다투고, 짙은 초록은 고리를 그리며 감아 도는 옅은 크림색 맥에 끊어집니다. 마감은 유리질이 아니라 무광에 곱게 알갱이지고, 한쪽 어깨에는 주변 표피보다 살짝 내려앉은 더 짙은 황록색 결정의 공동이 자리합니다.
포도석은 칼슘알루미늄 규산염으로, 독립된 단일 결정으로 자라는 일이 거의 없습니다. 대신 포도상 각질과 촘촘한 방사상 집합체로 자라기 때문에, 이렇게 손에 차는 둥근 형태로 나오는 경우가 많습니다. 모스 경도 6에서 6.5로 자유롭게 다룰 수 있을 만큼 단단하며, 약간 밀랍 같은 광택은 빛을 되쏘기보다 부드럽게 머금습니다.
구체의 지름은 3.3 cm, 무게는 50 g입니다. 촬영을 위해 투명 아크릴 블록 위 흰 퍼티에 올려 두었으며, 위의 사진들은 바로 이 구체를 담고 있습니다.
