강물에 닳은 공처럼 둥글고 오래된 병유리 같은 색을 띤 이 포도석은 결정군이 아니라 단괴입니다. 거의 구형에 가까운 치밀한 덩어리로, 표피는 무광이며 희미하게 알갱이 진 느낌을 주고, 얇은 껍질이 아직 붙어 있는 자리에는 옅은 크림색과 담황색 얼룩이 섞여 있습니다. 얕은 이음선 하나가 한쪽 어깨를 넘어가며 꿰맨 자국처럼 윗부분을 가릅니다.
포도석은 대개 독립된 결정 대신 방사상 섬유로 자라며, 그 섬유가 중심에서 바깥으로 조밀하게 뻗어 수집가들이 아는 둥근 포도상 덩어리를 만듭니다. 이런 단괴를 톱으로 잘라 보면 섬유질 내부가 고운 침상 결정의 부채꼴로 드러나지만, 여기처럼 온전히 남겨 두면 성장의 흔적은 매끈하면서 살짝 울퉁불퉁한 겉면으로만 읽어 낼 수 있습니다. 모스 경도 6에서 6.5로, 부드러운 녹색이 주는 인상보다 훨씬 단단한 광물입니다.
