Yaogangxian, Hunan, purple fluorite with quartz and siderite at 6 cm and 155 g; a small cabinet piece with a classic combination.
Chinese fluorite has become a staple of modern collections for its sharp crystal faces, strong colour and a lustre that reads well from across the room.
Good quartz is about hexagonal prisms with clean terminations and the glassy lustre that lets a cluster catch light from every angle. Siderite is iron carbonate; it forms brown to golden curved rhombs and lens-shaped crystals with a pearly to submetallic lustre.
Hunan is the heartland of Chinese mineral collecting, home to Yaogangxian, Xianghualing and Shangbao, and its fluorite, calcite and sulfides are the benchmark for the country.
Dimensions place it in the small cabinet range, 6 × 5 × 4 cm (2.36 × 1.97 × 1.57 in) and 155 g (5.5 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.
