Soms componeert de natuur een stuk beter dan welke conservator ook: hier vormt een plaat glinsterend muscoviet van 17 cm een open nest, en in het midden daarvan rust één scheelietdipiramide in zacht perzikroze – één kristal, volmaakt geplaatst, als een ei dat de berg heeft gelegd. Dat isolement is de luxe. Niets verdringt het kristal, en het oog landt precies waar het hoort.
Het muscoviet verdient een eigen blik: duizenden parelmoeren blaadjes stapelen zich over de plaat tot overlappende rozetten, die zilverig oplichten zodra het stuk draait en het warme kristal in hun midden flatteren. Dit mica-nest is het handschrift van de hoge spleetholtes van de Xuebaoding-berg in het district Pingwu, Sichuan – de vindplaats die opnieuw heeft bepaald hoe scheeliet (CaWO4, tetragonaal) eruit kan zien.
Met 1.775 g en 17 × 13 × 7,1 cm is dit een echte kabinetplaat, die plat liggend even goed oogt als opgesteld op een standaard, en onder kortgolvig UV antwoordt het scheeliet met de blauwwitte gloed van de soort terwijl het mica donker blijft. Op de foto’s staat deze exacte plaat.
