About this specimen
Xuebaoding, Sichuan, scheelite with aquamarine at 2.7 cm and 35 g; a miniature. A stout honey-yellow scheelite crystal with glassy faces and a small clear aquamarine crystal attached at its side.
Scheelite is calcium tungstate, forming orange to honey-coloured bipyramids with a greasy lustre and a bright blue-white fluorescence under short-wave UV.
Aquamarine is the blue-green variety of beryl, forming hexagonal prisms with flat terminations; the Chinese material from Xuebaoding and Yunnan pairs it with muscovite and cassiterite.
The Xuebaoding veins of Pingwu County, Sichuan, produced the orange scheelite and muscovite-aquamarine combinations that put Chinese minerals on the map.
Dimensions place it in the miniature range, 2.7 × 2 × 2.6 cm (1.06 × 0.79 × 1.02 in) and 35 g (1.2 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.
