Over dit exemplaar
Een koepel van bleek turkoois, niet groter dan een pruim, met een oppervlak als geplet fluweel: deze aragoniet uit Yunnan bestaat uit microscopische naalden die zo dicht opeen staan dat de korst als suède oogt, tot het licht erop valt en het hele vlak begint te fonkelen. Het blauw loopt gelijkmatig van kruin tot rand en verbleekt alleen tot wit langs de breukrand waar de korst van het moedergesteente is losgekomen.
Aragoniet en calciet delen één formule, CaCO3, en verschillen alleen in de stapeling van de atomen: aragoniet orthorombisch en geneigd tot vezelige, naaldvormige groei, calciet trigonaal en blokvormig. Die structurele voorkeur levert hier het gevlokte oppervlak op. Bij hardheid 3,5 tot 4 zijn de naaldpunten kwetsbaar: stof af met lucht of een zachte kwast en weersta elke neiging om het stuk af te spoelen.
De korst is 4,6 cm breed, 4,1 cm hoog en 2,5 cm diep en weegt 80 g; zij staat op het kleine heldere acrylblokje dat op de afbeeldingen te zien is. Elke opname hier is alleen van dit stuk gemaakt.
