About this specimen
Yunnan red aragonite at 2.7 cm; a miniature, supplied in the display box shown. A rounded crust of aragonite in pink shading to lilac spreads over the top of a pale slab, the surface finely bobbled and the colour strongest across the centre.
Aragonite is the orthorhombic form of calcium carbonate; it favours needle-like and pseudo-hexagonal twinned crystals over calcite's rhombs.
Yunnan is China's most mineralogically diverse province, source of the pyromorphite, azurite and blue aragonite that have become collector favourites.
The piece is miniature in size, 2.7 × 2 × 1.3 cm (1.06 × 0.79 × 0.51 in). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.
