About this specimen

Yunnan blue aragonite with malachite and azurite at 133 g; a small cabinet piece with the copper district's colours together.

Aragonite is the orthorhombic form of calcium carbonate; it favours needle-like and pseudo-hexagonal twinned crystals over calcite's rhombs.

Malachite forms wherever copper ores weather, but few localities match the depth of green and the velvet surfaces of central African material. Azurite is copper carbonate in its deep-blue form; it often alters to malachite, so blue-and-green combinations are the natural pairing.

Yunnan is China's most mineralogically diverse province, source of the pyromorphite, azurite and blue aragonite that have become collector favourites.

Dimensions place it in the small cabinet range, 7.9 × 5.1 × 2.9 cm (3.11 × 2.01 × 1.14 in) and 133 g (4.7 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.

Copper mineral: avoid dust, wash hands after handling. Carbonate: never clean with acid or vinegar.

Each specimen is individually photographed and catalogued before it is listed.
