About this specimen
Fused lobes climb one another like a column of amber cauliflower, and every square millimetre of the surface is broken into minute pointed terminations that catch light as a sugary glitter. The colour runs from warm honey along the crests to deeper caramel in the hollows, with translucent straw-coloured edges where the thinnest crystal tips overhang.
Yunnan produces carbonate crusts of exactly this habit — rounded, rosette-tipped aggregates laid down by slow-seeping groundwater. Aragonite and calcite share the single formula CaCO3 and differ only in how their atoms stack, so a specimen like this cannot be split between them by eye; we list it honestly as aragonite/calcite until a proper test is run. Either way it is soft, around Mohs 3 to 4, and dislikes acids and hard knocks.
