Over dit exemplaar
Roestoranje kapjes zitten op honderden kleine kwartspunten over deze plaat uit Jiangxi, alsof de kristallen met de punt eerst in ijzer waren gedoopt. De aanslag is vlekkerig en onregelmatig: sommige beëindigingen zijn volledig gekleurd, andere dragen slechts een sproet, en dat zet de bleke glazige prisma's ertussen extra aan. Waar het kwarts uitdunt, komen messingkleurige metaalglanzende sulfidekristallen en staaldonkere matrix tevoorschijn.
IJzerhoudende oplossingen die na de kristallisatie van het kwarts door de holte trokken, lieten deze rode film achter, soms aan het oppervlak, soms er net onder ingesloten. Kwarts is SiO2, Mohs 7 en ongevoelig voor hanteren, wat een druse als deze tot een van de vergevingsgezindere pronkstukken maakt. De zachtere sulfiden in de tussenruimtes vormen het zwakke punt: alleen droog afstoffen, niets met zuur.
De plaat meet 10,7 × 6,1 × 4,1 cm en weegt 280 g. Een standaard hoort er niet bij; het stuk wordt voor de schaal in de hand getoond, en elke opname hier betreft precies dit exemplaar.
