一枚形如鹅蛋的白色结核，沿一侧开启，露出内部所藏。 外壳是瘤状的半透明石英，半似砂糖半似玻璃，像兜帽一样自顶端合拢；它所护住的空腔则呈深琥珀焦糖色，白色被剥去之处，同样的葡萄状质地以温暖的棕色重演一次。 两者之间的对比，正是这件标本的全部重点。
玛瑙与玉髓都是隐晶质的二氧化矽，SiO2，当富含矽质的流体渗入空腔，便自洞壁向内一层又一层铺陈沉积。 沿途带来的铁，通常就是这类琥珀色与棕色调的来源。 莫氏硬度 6.5–7，是收藏柜里较为耐久的一类：没有解理，硬度也足以无视随手造成的刮擦。
