对着光举起时，这颗骷髅头几乎变得半透明——温暖的乳白至蜜色玉髓让光线深入颅骨数毫米才耗尽。 抛光的程度足以在额头与颧骨上拉出锐利的高光，牙齿刻成两排整齐的行列，每一颗都以一道浅浅的垂直切痕方正地分开。 沿着左侧颞部，雕刻者遇上一处狭窄的灰色晶簇孔洞，便将它保留成敞开而未抛光的模样。
那处孔洞才是有趣的地方。 玛瑙的形成是二氧化矽自空腔洞壁向内填充，而当供给在中心闭合之前便告耗尽，最后的空间就维持中空，晶簇于是在其中结晶。 从这样的结核中雕出一颗骷髅头是一场赌博：在表面凿穿之前，没有人看得见那个空腔，而它落在哪里，决定了整件作品。
