About this specimen

Indonesia grape agate at 2.9 cm; a miniature, supplied in the display box shown. Chalcedony grown as a cluster of small purple spheres, each one smooth and rounded, packed together in the form that gives the material its grape name.

Agate is banded chalcedony, built up layer by layer in cavities.

The Mamuju district of Sulawesi is the source of the botryoidal blue-green chalcedony sold as grape agate.

The piece is miniature in size, 2.9 × 2.2 × 1 cm (1.14 × 0.87 × 0.39 in). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.

Specimens are photographed and catalogued one at a time before they reach this page.
