About this specimen
A drift of lavender spheres crowds the upper half of this Mamuju specimen, few of them larger than a peppercorn and each one glossy enough to carry a small highlight. Lower down the growth flattens into a smooth mauve shelf, deeper in tone than the balls above it, and at the lower right a grey-black patch of the host rock breaks through where the coating ran out.
Nothing here has been cut, polished or shaped. Grape agate is botryoidal chalcedony — silica, SiO2, laid down from solution in cavities in volcanic rock, sphere by sphere, each one thickening outward in concentric shells until neighbours crowd together and flatten against one another. The lilac tone shifts with the light: cool and almost white on the raised spheres, warmer and more violet in the shaded hollows. At Mohs 6.5 to 7 with no cleavage, it needs nothing more than a soft brush and a shelf out of direct sun.
It measures 5.3 × 4.3 × 4.3 cm and weighs 71 g. No stand comes with it; the images were taken in hand, and every sphere in them belongs to this specimen.
