About this specimen

Held against the light this skull goes nearly translucent — a warm cream-to-honey chalcedony that lets light travel several millimetres into the cranium before it gives out. The polish is high enough to throw hard highlights down the brow and along the cheekbone, and the teeth are scored into two even rows, each one squared off by a shallow vertical cut. Down the left temple the carver ran into a narrow pocket of grey drusy crystals and left it open and unpolished.

That pocket is the interesting part. Agate forms as silica fills a cavity from the walls inward, and when the supply runs out before the centre closes, the last space stays hollow and druse crystallises into it. Cutting a skull from such a nodule is a gamble: the void cannot be seen until the surface breaks through into it, and where it lands decides the whole piece.

Substantial at 10.7 × 5.8 × 8.9 cm and 830 g, photographed on the round black display base it sits on. What the camera recorded here is what leaves the shelf.

About Agate

Agate is a banded variety of microcrystalline quartz (chalcedony) recognized for its concentric or parallel color zoning. Specimens come from volcanic and sedimentary host rocks worldwide, with notable Chinese, Brazilian, and Mexican sources favored by collectors.
