About this specimen

A white nodule the shape of a goose egg, opened down one side to show what was hiding inside. The outer crust is knobbly translucent quartz, half sugar and half glass, closing over the top like a hood; the cavity it protects runs a deep amber-caramel, the same botryoidal texture repeated in warm brown where the white has been stripped away. The contrast between the two is the whole point of the piece.

Agate and chalcedony are microcrystalline silica, SiO2, laid down layer over layer as silica-rich fluid works into a cavity and lines it from the walls inward. Iron picked up along the way is the usual source of amber and brown tones like these. At Mohs 6.5–7 it is among the more durable things you can keep in a cabinet: no cleavage, and hard enough to shrug off casual scratching.

4.6 × 3.8 × 3.8 cm and 85 g, set on putty on the clear acrylic cube shown. Photographed from this specimen alone.

About Agate

Agate is a banded variety of microcrystalline quartz (chalcedony) recognized for its concentric or parallel color zoning. Specimens come from volcanic and sedimentary host rocks worldwide, with notable Chinese, Brazilian, and Mexican sources favored by collectors.

Frequently asked questions

Will I receive the exact specimen shown?

Yes. Every specimen is a single, one-of-a-kind piece, and the photographs show the exact item you will receive — never a stock photo.

Is this Agate natural?

Yes — specimens like this form naturally. As is standard in the trade, some pieces are gently cleaned or trimmed; we photograph the actual specimen and describe its origin and condition conservatively.

How is it packed and shipped?

Orders ship worldwide with fully insured, tracked delivery, carefully packed to protect fragile crystals. A display base is included.

Can I return it?

Yes — there is a 14-day return window.
