一团紧实纠结的近黑色锡石晶体盘踞在这件四川小标本的顶部，晶面光洁如镜，映出锐利的白色高光；而较薄的棱边透出红棕色的光晕，那正是泄露这种矿物身分之处。 顶部丛生着锐利且彼此贯穿的晶端，底部则有一层银白色的片状晶体沿边展开，把整组晶体托离基座。
锡石是二氧化锡，SnO2，也是世界上最主要的锡矿石。 它结晶于四方晶系，常呈短柱状与陡峭的双锥，并经常结合成膝状双晶——正是此处纠结在一起的那些晶形，而绝非八面体。 莫氏硬度 6–7，质地坚硬，以其体积而言重量明显偏高；金刚光泽至半金属光泽，远比它近乎不透明的颜色所暗示的更为明亮。
