About this specimen

Xuebaoding, Sichuan, cassiterite with aquamarine at 3.6 cm and 58 g; a miniature. A pale blue aquamarine crystal standing on a block of black cassiterite, the two minerals the supplier lists.

Look for the elbow twins and mirror-like lustre that make cassiterite so distinctive; its density is nearly seven times that of water.

Aquamarine is the blue-green variety of beryl, forming hexagonal prisms with flat terminations; the Chinese material from Xuebaoding and Yunnan pairs it with muscovite and cassiterite.

Sichuan hosts Xuebaoding, Jinkouhe and Leshan, sources of aquamarine, scheelite, prehnite, gypsum and the epidote-quartz skarn specimens seen here.

Dimensions place it in the miniature range, 3.6 × 2.2 × 2.6 cm (1.42 × 0.87 × 1.02 in) and 58 g (2.0 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.

Specimens are photographed and catalogued one at a time before they reach this page.
