About this specimen

Xuebaoding, Sichuan, cassiterite with mica at 3.1 cm and 30 g; a miniature. A block of black cassiterite with silver mica flakes along one side, the two minerals the supplier lists.

Cassiterite is tin oxide, heavy and adamantine, forming brown-black twinned crystals; the Chinese tungsten-tin deposits are a leading source.

Mica books, silvery to bronze, are the usual companion of pegmatite minerals and add a flash of pearly lustre to the piece.

Xuebaoding in Pingwu County is the classic Chinese source of scheelite, aquamarine and cassiterite on muscovite, mined from high-altitude greisen veins.

Dimensions place it in the miniature range, 3.1 × 2.4 × 2 cm (1.22 × 0.94 × 0.79 in) and 30 g (1.1 oz). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.

Every specimen here is photographed and catalogued individually before listing.
