About this specimen

Xuebaoding, Sichuan, cassiterite with mica at 3.5 cm and 20 g; a miniature. A single glossy black cassiterite crystal with sharp faces and a submetallic lustre, a small mica flake at its top.

Cassiterite is tin oxide, heavy and adamantine, forming brown-black twinned crystals; the Chinese tungsten-tin deposits are a leading source.

Mica forms pearly hexagonal books that catch the light between the other crystals.

Xuebaoding in Pingwu County is the classic Chinese source of scheelite, aquamarine and cassiterite on muscovite, mined from high-altitude greisen veins.

Dimensions place it in the miniature range, 3.5 × 1.5 × 1.8 cm (1.38 × 0.59 × 0.71 in) and 20 g (0.7 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.

Every specimen here is photographed and catalogued individually before listing.
