About this specimen
Xuebaoding, Sichuan, cassiterite with aquamarine at 6.2 cm and 118 g; a small cabinet piece. A plate of pale mica with black cassiterite crystals and small pale aquamarine crystals, the two minerals the supplier lists.
Look for the elbow twins and mirror-like lustre that make cassiterite so distinctive; its density is nearly seven times that of water.
Glassy hexagonal prisms and a sea-blue tone define the aquamarine variety.
The Xuebaoding veins of Pingwu County, Sichuan, produced the orange scheelite and muscovite-aquamarine combinations that put Chinese minerals on the map.
