About this specimen
Xuebaoding, Pingwu Co., Sichuan, cassiterite with quartz at 3.5 cm; a miniature, supplied on the acrylic stand shown.
Look for the elbow twins and mirror-like lustre that make cassiterite so distinctive; its density is nearly seven times that of water.
Rock crystal is judged on termination quality, clarity and how the crystals sit together, and the Chinese localities have raised the bar on all three.
Sichuan's alpine-type veins and skarns yield aquamarine, prehnite, epidote and scheelite of international quality.
