About this specimen
Xuebaoding, Sichuan, cassiterite at 3 cm and 44 g; a miniature. A single glossy black cassiterite crystal with sharp faces and a bright submetallic lustre.
Look for the elbow twins and mirror-like lustre that make cassiterite so distinctive; its density is nearly seven times that of water.
Xuebaoding in Pingwu County is the classic Chinese source of scheelite, aquamarine and cassiterite on muscovite, mined from high-altitude greisen veins.
The piece is miniature in size, 3 × 2.3 × 2.1 cm (1.18 × 0.91 × 0.83 in) and 44 g (1.6 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.
