About this specimen

Xuebaoding, Sichuan, cassiterite at 2.1 cm and 15.4 g; a thumbnail. A tiny black cassiterite crystal with bright faces and small white flecks.

Cassiterite is tin oxide, heavy and adamantine, forming brown-black twinned crystals; the Chinese tungsten-tin deposits are a leading source.

The Xuebaoding veins of Pingwu County, Sichuan, produced the orange scheelite and muscovite-aquamarine combinations that put Chinese minerals on the map.

By size it is thumbnail, 2.1 × 1.7 × 1.4 cm (0.83 × 0.67 × 0.55 in) and 15.4 g (0.5 oz). Condition is otherwise as photographed.

Each specimen is individually photographed and catalogued before it is listed.
