About this specimen

Xuebaoding, Sichuan, cassiterite with mica and calcite at 3.1 cm and 48 g; a miniature. A block of black cassiterite with white calcite and mica across the top that the supplier likens to a snow-capped mountain, the three minerals the supplier lists.

Cassiterite is tin oxide, heavy and adamantine, forming brown-black twinned crystals; the Chinese tungsten-tin deposits are a leading source.

Mica forms pearly hexagonal books that catch the light between the other crystals. Collectors chase calcite for form rather than colour: crisp crystal edges and a habit you can identify from across the room.

The Xuebaoding veins of Pingwu County, Sichuan, produced the orange scheelite and muscovite-aquamarine combinations that put Chinese minerals on the map.

By size it is miniature, 3.1 × 2.5 × 2.9 cm (1.22 × 0.98 × 1.14 in) and 48 g (1.7 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.

Carbonate: never clean with acid or vinegar.

Every specimen here is photographed and catalogued individually before listing.
