About this specimen
Xuebaoding, Sichuan, cassiterite at 4.7 cm and 129 g; a miniature with real weight. A large black cassiterite crystal with glossy, striated faces and a bright submetallic lustre, twinned in the classic form.
Look for the elbow twins and mirror-like lustre that make cassiterite so distinctive; its density is nearly seven times that of water.
Xuebaoding in Pingwu County is the classic Chinese source of scheelite, aquamarine and cassiterite on muscovite, mined from high-altitude greisen veins.
Dimensions place it in the miniature range, 4.7 × 4.3 × 3.4 cm (1.85 × 1.69 × 1.34 in) and 129 g (4.6 oz). Condition is otherwise as photographed.
