About this specimen

Xuebaoding, Sichuan, cassiterite with mica at 4.2 cm and 75 g; a miniature. A group of glossy black cassiterite crystals with sharp faces and pale mica flakes in the gaps, the lustre submetallic.

Look for the elbow twins and mirror-like lustre that make cassiterite so distinctive; its density is nearly seven times that of water.

Mica books, silvery to bronze, are the usual companion of pegmatite minerals and add a flash of pearly lustre to the piece.

The Xuebaoding veins of Pingwu County, Sichuan, produced the orange scheelite and muscovite-aquamarine combinations that put Chinese minerals on the map.

The piece is miniature in size, 4.2 × 2.4 × 3.3 cm (1.65 × 0.94 × 1.30 in) and 75 g (2.6 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.

Specimens are photographed and catalogued one at a time before they reach this page.
