About this specimen

Xuebaoding, Sichuan, cassiterite at 2.1 cm and 15.7 g; a thumbnail. A tiny black cassiterite crystal with bright faces and an iridescent sheen.

Cassiterite is tin oxide, heavy and adamantine, forming brown-black twinned crystals; the Chinese tungsten-tin deposits are a leading source.

Xuebaoding in Pingwu County is the classic Chinese source of scheelite, aquamarine and cassiterite on muscovite, mined from high-altitude greisen veins.

The piece is thumbnail in size, 2.1 × 1.5 × 1.7 cm (0.83 × 0.59 × 0.67 in) and 15.7 g (0.6 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.

Specimens are photographed and catalogued one at a time before they reach this page.
