About this specimen
Jet-black cassiterite blades splay outward in a shallow fan, every face ruled with fine vertical striations that read as hard silver lines when the light moves. The two largest crystals meet along a sharp contact near the top, giving the group its stepped, wedge-cut profile. Beneath them a small water-clear quartz crystal takes the weight, its point tucked under the fan like a strut.
Cassiterite (SnO2) is the principal ore of tin: tetragonal, Mohs 6 to 7, and dense enough that a piece this size sits in the palm heavier than it looks. Yaogangxian in Chenzhou, Hunan is a tungsten-tin vein system, which is why its cassiterite arrives perched on quartz rather than locked in ore. The striations are growth lines running parallel to the prism axis — not damage, and the reason the mineral reads flat black at one angle and mirror-bright at the next.
