About this specimen
Xuebaoding, Sichuan, cassiterite with mica at 6.6 cm and 154 g; a small cabinet piece. Glossy black cassiterite crystals capping a cluster of tan mica rosettes, the cassiterite sharply faced and the mica fanning beneath.
Cassiterite is tin oxide, heavy and adamantine, forming brown-black twinned crystals; the Chinese tungsten-tin deposits are a leading source.
Mica forms pearly hexagonal books that catch the light between the other crystals.
Xuebaoding in Pingwu County is the classic Chinese source of scheelite, aquamarine and cassiterite on muscovite, mined from high-altitude greisen veins.
