About this specimen
A spray of colourless quartz prisms opens like a fan, the longest ending in a clean glassy termination, and where the blades cross a lavender fluorite cube has been caught mid-growth, its surface frosted and its interior a soft violet. Two knots of cassiterite sit directly on that cube — black, metallic, sharply faceted — with more scattered through the quartz on the left and a second violet patch showing at the far right.
Cassiterite (SnO2) is the principal ore of tin and one of the heaviest common oxides; its near-black adamantine lustre and the way it wedges into a quartz spray are typical of the Yaogangxian tungsten-tin veins. An ore mineral, a halide and a silicate sharing one pocket is why combination pieces hold attention longer than single-species crystals do.
Airy and light at 5.6 × 3.3 × 4.6 cm and only 40 g, it is putty-mounted on a clear acrylic plinth that keeps the quartz points clear of the shelf. Everything pictured is what ships — specimen and plinth both, photographed as one piece.
