About this specimen
A tight knot of near-black cassiterite crystals crowns this small Sichuan piece, faces polished to a mirror finish that throws hard white highlights and, along the thinner edges, the red-brown glow that gives the mineral away. Sharp interpenetrating terminations bristle across the top, while a bed of silvery-white platy crystals runs along the base and lifts the group clear.
Cassiterite is tin dioxide, SnO2, and the world’s principal ore of tin. It crystallises in the tetragonal system as short prisms and steep bipyramids that frequently join into elbow-shaped twins — the forms knotted together here, and never octahedra. At Mohs 6–7 it is hard and noticeably heavy for its size, with an adamantine to submetallic lustre far brighter than its near-opaque colour suggests.
Compact at 2.8 × 1.8 × 2.5 cm and 34 g. The cluster ships on the clear acrylic block seen here, and these frames record that exact crystal group.
