About this specimen
Xuebaoding, Sichuan, cassiterite with scheelite and mica at 3.8 cm; a miniature. The supplier did not record a weight.
Look for the elbow twins and mirror-like lustre that make cassiterite so distinctive; its density is nearly seven times that of water.
Scheelite is calcium tungstate, forming orange to honey-coloured bipyramids with a greasy lustre and a bright blue-white fluorescence under short-wave UV. Mica books, silvery to bronze, are the usual companion of pegmatite minerals and add a flash of pearly lustre to the piece.
Sichuan's alpine-type veins and skarns yield aquamarine, prehnite, epidote and scheelite of international quality.
The piece is miniature in size, 3.1 × 3.8 × 2.5 cm (1.22 × 1.50 × 0.98 in). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.
