About this specimen

Xuebaoding, Sichuan, cassiterite with mica at 2.2 cm and 12.6 g; a thumbnail. A tiny black cassiterite crystal with bright faces and golden mica at its base, the two minerals the supplier lists.

Look for the elbow twins and mirror-like lustre that make cassiterite so distinctive; its density is nearly seven times that of water.

Mica forms pearly hexagonal books that catch the light between the other crystals.

The Xuebaoding veins of Pingwu County, Sichuan, produced the orange scheelite and muscovite-aquamarine combinations that put Chinese minerals on the map.

The piece is thumbnail in size, 2.2 × 1.8 × 1.7 cm (0.87 × 0.71 × 0.67 in) and 12.6 g (0.4 oz). Condition is otherwise as photographed.

Specimens are photographed and catalogued one at a time before they reach this page.
