薄如指甲的方解石刃晶在整个正面交叠成朵朵花饰，在彼此拥挤之处白中透着最淡的暖粉。 每一朵花都由自同一点向外扇开的扁平板状晶体构成，这些扇形又层层堆叠成低矮的棱脊，因此表面尽是棱边与细小的阴影。 在顶端方解石变薄之处，一枚灰色的玻璃质晶核透了出来。
这种板状、花朵般的晶体习性，来自方解石快速而扁平地生长，而非缓慢地长成菱面体——与产出冰洲石的是同一个矿种，只是换了一件截然不同的外衣。 CaCO3，莫氏硬度 3，具三组完全解理：此处最脆弱的部位就是刃晶的边缘，而柔软的干刷是这件标本唯一该接触的清洁工具。
