一枚琥珀色的白钨矿晶体，锥面锐利、色如温暖的蜂蜜，立在一小座淡色云母与石英构成的基座上。 它的晶面呈阶梯状而非镜面般平整——生长层像屋瓦一样层层铺叠——颜色从右肩近乎橙色过渡到左侧较淡的杏色，通体透明到足以让内部的裂隙闪出光来。
四川雪宝顶正是这类假八面体白钨矿的产地，它们生长在高海拔的云英岩脉中，与绿柱石、锡石以及成叠的白云母为伴。 白钨矿是钨酸钙，CaWO4：以这么浅的颜色而言密度异常地大，莫氏硬度 4.5–5，在短波紫外光下稳定发出明亮的蓝白色萤光，是少数值得为它添购一盏灯的矿种。
