About this specimen
Xuebaoding, Sichuan, scheelite with calcite at 3.1 cm and 42 g; a miniature. A sharp orange scheelite crystal with white calcite patches on its faces, the two minerals the supplier lists.
Scheelite is calcium tungstate, forming orange to honey-coloured bipyramids with a greasy lustre and a bright blue-white fluorescence under short-wave UV.
Collectors chase calcite for form rather than colour: crisp crystal edges and a habit you can identify from across the room.
The Xuebaoding veins of Pingwu County, Sichuan, produced the orange scheelite and muscovite-aquamarine combinations that put Chinese minerals on the map.
