把湖南那种厚重的辉锑矿板劈开，里面等着的可能正是这样的景象：一个内壁衬满银亮细针的晶洞，针晶呈松散的星芒状辐射开来，每一根都亮得像是湿的。 四周的洞壁是块状辉锑矿，沿长轴带着条纹，并剥离成大片钢灰色的解理面；白色的重晶石结壳则在洞的下半部堆积起来，楔入针晶基部的周围与下方。
辉锑矿是硫化锑，化学式为 Sb2S3，也是收藏家会拥有的最软矿物之一：莫氏硬度 2，软到指甲就能划出痕迹，且沿每一根针的长轴都具完全解理。 皮肤油脂会使金属表面失去光泽，因此请握持灰色母岩来拿取标本，并让它远离强光与潮湿空气——这两者都会随时间磨平硫化锑的光彩。
