黑色的重晶石刃晶以各种角度彼此交错，薄如板岩碎片，边缘处处镶着乳白色，而整团纠结之上撒满了钒铅矿：数百颗极微小的琥珀至橄榄金色晶体，像落在木炭上的霜一样攫取光线。 转动标本，重晶石便会在解理面上显出柔和的珍珠光泽。
钒铅矿（Pb5(VO43Cl）是一种钒酸铅，结晶于铅矿床氧化带的上部层位，而摩洛哥长期以来就是这种栖于重晶石之上的钒铅矿的经典产地。 它非常软，莫氏硬度 2.5–3，因此这些闪光绝不该碰上刷子。 重晶石硬度仅略高，但对非金属矿物而言密度异常大，这也是它拿在手上比看起来更沉的原因。
