枪铁灰的刃状晶体以各种角度横越这块冷水江岩板的正面，最大的一丛几乎与标本同宽，像一记被弹响的和弦般张开。 每一片刃上都刻着唯有辉锑矿画得出的深纵条纹，较宽的晶面则接住一道硬冷的金属闪光。 它们底下是一层淡色的板状重晶石与细小的无色石英，橄榄黄的斑块标记出硫化物开始蚀变之处。
冷水江位于湘中的锑矿带，多数收藏者这辈子经手过最好的辉锑矿（Sb2S3）都出自这里，而这也是他们会拥有的最娇弱的矿物之一。 莫氏硬度 2，比指甲还软，几乎不需要什么压力就会弯折或折断。 保持干燥、避开直射阳光，而且绝不要清洗它——水会永久毁掉那层镜面光泽。
