这件德兴小标本几乎通体全白。 无色石英细晶结成的拱壳覆盖了整个上表面，密实到一臂之外看去就像撒开的砂糖。 晶壳中央略偏右处嵌着闪锌矿：一团不比扁豆更大的深灰色金属晶体，其上栖着三四颗黄铜色的金色晶体，是整件标本上唯一的暖色。
闪锌矿是硫化锌，ZnS，颜色愈深，表示结构中的铁愈多——这里近乎黑色、带半金属光泽的部分，属于这个区间里富铁的一端，而非蜜褐色的宝石级变种。 它在六个方向上具完全解理，摩氏硬度 3.5 至 4，这也是好晶体常常带着碰伤的边缘抵达的原因。 江西德兴是中国大型铜矿区之一，所出的硫化物正是长在这类浅色矽质晶壳上。
