About this specimen
Hunan sphalerite-quartz-calcite at 236 g; a small cabinet piece for the UV collector.
Sphalerite's high, almost adamantine lustre makes the species sparkle under a lamp.
Rock crystal is judged on termination quality, clarity and how the crystals sit together, and the Chinese localities have raised the bar on all three. Calcite is the most shape-shifting of common minerals: over 800 crystal forms have been described, and Chinese localities produce many of the best.
Hunan's tungsten-tin and lead-zinc mines have supplied the world with fluorite, calcite, quartz and sulfide specimens since the 1990s.
