About this specimen
Hunan gem sphalerite with galena, quartz and calcite at 12.4 cm; a large cabinet plate the supplier's label lists at 594 g.
Sphalerite's high, almost adamantine lustre makes the species sparkle under a lamp.
Galena is lead sulfide, forming heavy, mirror-bright cubes and octahedra; it is the classic companion of sphalerite and quartz in lead-zinc deposits. Rock crystal is judged on termination quality, clarity and how the crystals sit together, and the Chinese localities have raised the bar on all three.
Hunan is the heartland of Chinese mineral collecting, home to Yaogangxian, Xianghualing and Shangbao, and its fluorite, calcite and sulfides are the benchmark for the country.
