About this specimen
Hebei sphalerite at 5.2 cm and 39 g; a small cabinet piece. A plate of dark grey matrix with glossy red-brown sphalerite crystals scattered across it.
Sphalerite is zinc sulfide; iron-poor crystals are honey to red and transparent, while iron-rich ones (marmatite) go black with a resinous to adamantine lustre.
Hebei's mountain districts produce calcite, quartz and skarn minerals from small mines north of Beijing.
