About this specimen
Hebei sphalerite at 6.9 cm and 36 g; a small cabinet piece. A thin grey plate with glossy red-brown sphalerite crystals scattered across it.
Sphalerite is zinc sulfide; iron-poor crystals are honey to red and transparent, while iron-rich ones (marmatite) go black with a resinous to adamantine lustre.
Hebei's mountain districts produce calcite, quartz and skarn minerals from small mines north of Beijing.
